The Town of Fogo Island will be considering amending its development regulations to allow mineral workings (Quarry) in the Central Community Development Area at the next Regular Council Meeting scheduled for May 28, 2019.
Mineral workings (quarries) at present are not eligible for approval by any means if they are located in any
Community Development Area (CDA). The objective in this amendment is to enable such approvals but only in the Central CDA for only sand, gravel and stone, and only by way of discretionary approvals, i.e.: on a case by case basis.
Below is the condition's respecting the minimum distances from adjacent uses for mineral workings:
Minimum Distance of Pit or Quarry Working
From boundaries of Community Development Areas [the amendment would make this not applicable in the case of the Central CDA] or Restricted Special Area Zones 300 metres
Any area likely to be developed during the life of the pit or quarry (from houses, school, businesses, etc.) 300 metres
Public highway or street or Public Trails shown on Zoning Maps 90 metres
Water body or watercourse 50 metres
The Town wishes to hear from its residents on this matter, please forward your comments in person, in writing or by email if you are in favour or not in favour of this proposed amendment on or before May 22, 2019. Please include your name on your submission
